I can't look at Kurt von Trapp without thinking of...
popculture-and-i: I see why the character he was named after reminded them of Chris. So rosy and innocent.<3 Also, I love this film?! Maria is badass and funny. Totally disorganised and… liberal? Who knew! I thought she was super prim and dull (I think it’s the hair). It’s a good film to be baking to! I absolutely ADORE this movie! ADORE! I plan to go on The Sound of Music tour at some...

Ich habe keine Lust auf...
…Skifahren. Okay, so I feel terrible because I’m supposed to go skiing on Thursday, but I honestly do not have the energy to go. I am just emotionally, mentally, and physically drained after the past few weeks.  How do I get out of this one?  This is also me starting my New Year’s resolution a few days early: Make myself happy because putting everyone else first is just not...

Why I Will Make a Terrible Wife and/or Mother...
…should I choose to be either. I find the thought of both incredibly terrifying right now. I haven’t really been a big fan of Christmas for the last few years. I think I really used to like Christmas. I think at one point, I felt extreme joy in giving the perfect present. I used to start thinking about presents in Oktober. To be fair, last Christmas was shit because my sister was in...

So I actually had a good Christmas Eve alone. I really enjoyed it. Even the part where I obsessively read about my former bad habit.  Seriously. I loved it. Crazy or not, it’s exactly what I needed.

My First Christmas in Germany
Christmas is fast approaching, and I fear that my Christmas in Germany will not be as different from the American Christmas I would have had.  Why? Today I have to clean my apartment and then go to the grocery store with millions of other people to buy food for Christmas dinner. Then, on Christmas, I have to cook dinner and eat with two people that I feel obligated to spend Christmas with. Now I...

Plan for Today
Today I plan to relax. I am letting my hair air dry. I am wearing my MSU sweatshirt - something so Non-German it’s ridiculous. I am letting the all too rare sunlight stream in my window while I read a book that was a birthday (perhaps Christmas) present. I will sit on my couch wrapped up in a big, fluffy blanket. Maybe later I will go for a walk, but later is just too far off to think about...

die Einbahnstraße
Noun: One-way street.  Funny story: The first time I was in Germany, I saw all these signs that said “Einbahnstraße.” I had no idea what it meant, and I was like, “Oh cool! Every city has a street called Einbahnstraße.” Later, when I really looked at the sign (blue background with a big white arrow), I realized that it was not a street name. It was the word for one-way...

More Informed
Now that Brittany has informed about the RF’s funding (Thank you. I did not actually know that. I suspected but wasn’t sure. Quiz Bowl fail), I can retract my statements about suggesting that perhaps someone look to their funding as a way to solve the tuition funding.  I do not retract the statement about people being obsessed with William an Kate’s engagement photos. Like I...

Something I Don't Understand
So. Students are protesting in London because the tuition rate was raised, and protestors attacked Charles and Camilla’s car. Yet we still see headlines boasting that people finally have pictures of William and Kate! Yay!!!!!!! News!!!!!!! How is the Royal Family supported? I honestly don’t know. Is it by tax dollars from the Commonwealth? Or do they just use their own money?...

Reviving My Blog
So, all I’ve been doing lately is re-blogging pictures of owls and hedgehogs. It’s time to revive my blog, and I will do that by posting an interesting German word or phrase. I have either learned it during my time here, or I just kind of like it and want to share. So without further ado, today’s fun German word: faulenzen, verb. To lounge; to laze about; to air one’s...

Christmas Shopping
Stresses me out. How come it’s easier to buy something for two people who you’ve only known for three months than for three people you’ve known your whole life? Or for one person you’ve known for three years?

My Room is a Hot Mess
Seriously. I have three coats thrown over one chair. Papers strewn about. Don’t even get me started on my desk. Ugh. It’s been a rough week, and that is why my room looks like this. I will clean it up at some point. Tonight is not looking like the night.

Things That Are Awesome
My lesson today included the “Bed Intruder” song as an example of African American Vernacular English (AAVE). And it showed how people sometimes make fun of AAVE because they consider it to be spoken by less-intelligent, uneducated, and/or lazy people. It should be noted, however, that linguists consider AAVE a legitimate dialect of American Standard English. The kids love it.
